January 13, 2011

Dear family,

First of all, I want to apologize for not writing last week. We went to the mall to go shopping and it took a little longer than we expected so we came back at around 4:30. We tried to come back and do emails, but all the computers were down, so none of the missionaries in our zone were able to do emails last week.

We have a lot of people that are doing good right now. We have Lurdes Lopez and she's set for the 22nd of January. She came to church last week and she also read from the Book of Mormon. I think that she has a strong desire to learn more and be baptized. We're also teaching Katherine Vasquez and she's set for the 22nd of January, also. We taught her the 3rd lesson yesterday, and even though she's 15, she said that she really felt the Spirit because she said that she was learning something new. I think that also when we taught "endure to the end", that really hit her because she has younger brothers that got baptized, but haven't been to church in a while. We also have Jose and Teresa Gonzalez, and they are set for the 29th of January. We wanted to marry them and baptize them this week, but Jose said that he's working on a construction contract that will take him a little longer than expected, so that's understandable. Rocio Aguilar moved to the North zone, and so I'll baptize her, but the North zone will be the one that counts the baptism because they were the last missionaries to teach her.

So we won't be baptizing this transfer. We know that they're important, but we also know that it's not just the numbers that count. There are times when we will only be able to plant the seed and help the seed grow, but not actually harvest in the fruits. I feel like Elder Colon and I tried our best and that whoever is here next transfer in this area will have a lot of baptisms the first couple weeks. The investigators that we're teaching right now are pretty solid, so I have no doubt that they'll all get baptized.

We did service for a member where we all took a pickax and broke up mounds of dirt and separated the rocks from the dirt. It was hard because there was only one pickax and 20 mounds, but there were about 6 people helping, so we didn't have too much trouble. It kind of reminded me of Snow White where all the dwarfs were hacking at the gold mine or whatever.

So transfers are next week on the 18th, and I think I might be leaving this transfer because I got a packet in the mail about driving privileges...so...I might be driving next transfer?

We also had the Jehovah's Witnesses knock on our door yesterday. It was 4 of us against 2 of them, but we didn't try to bash. Usually what we try to do is tell them our beliefs and offer them a Book of Mormon so that's what we did.

That's really cool that Dad knew Bro. Manuele because for our Christmas party, we as missionaries sang "O Holy Night" and he played the piano, and it was really good. And then I was actually at his house when I was talking to you all on the phone.

It's actually not too cold here in Las Vegas anymore. Now that the days are longer, the sun is up more and it's a little warmer. It still gets a little chilly at night, so we still bring a sweater. But we should be getting in to the rainy season soon, so I'm not too happy about the flooding that usually happens.

That's pretty much it from me. Elder Colon and I are getting along really well and it's been a good transfer, I think, even though we didn't have any baptisms. I'll tell you if I need anything.

I love you all!
Elder Meiners
P.S. The picture I sent you is our zone right now before transfers. Elder Colon is the one on the far right.
